Winning in Losing in Standard Chartered Bank's World's Coolest Intern Competition
Katherine Liew is the World's Coolest Intern
The result for the World's Coolest Intern, an international contest run by Standard Chartered Breeze, seeking for the World's Coolest Intern to join their mobile banking team in Singapore, was released last Saturday, November 20th, 2010. Katherine Liew, a law student from the Adelaide, South Australia, was declared the World's Coolest Intern for 2010 while Farak Sidek and Sarah Chong were first and second runner up, respectively.
Filipina Made it to the Top 10 of the World's Coolest Intern
Jonha D. Revesencio, a 21-year-old blogger from the Philippines who loves to write about investing, saving and expose blogger scams, was included in the Top 10 and the only Filipina to make it to the list.
Winning the Hearts of the People is More Than Winning the Competition
Apparently, I am that Filipina. Getting in to the Top 10 wasn't easy as everyone has put up a good fight and the level that everyone brought up in the competition, the bank must had a hard time choosing the winner. A day before the winner is going to be announced, Farah Sidek and Katherine Liew collaborated with me so we could create a three-way swap and write about each other since we know the campaign more than anyone else. Farah wrote about me. Katherine wrote about Farah while I decided to write about them both and called them the Social Media Wizards of Oz - since both of them are currently residing in Australia.
I may not have won the most coveted title, but it has been great learning experience for me and the others to learn more about the value of collaboration over competition. During one of the tasks, I contacted famous bloggers from the Philippines and asked if they could write about them and several of them responded positively such as Manuel Viloria of Viloria.net, Roel Abatayao of Bloggista, Roy Dela Cruz of The Struggling Blogger and Anton Diaz of OurAwesomePlanet. These bloggers are well known and well respected in the Philippine blogosphere and seeing them posting nice reviews and recommendations about me is something that is beyond my comprehension. For me, winning the hearts of the people that I look up to is something I could always be grateful and proud of.
Several highly influential bloggers such as Jim Randel of The Skinny On and Jen Friel of Talk Nerdy to Me Lover also expressed their support for me. These people are very influential and getting noticed by them is something that I couldn't imagine.
Invited as one of the Judges for the PEBA Awards Night
With all the support that I got from the people that I look up to, I have felt that I am already a winner. People who do not usually listen or notice me, started to and that's just something that's beyond my comprehension. Standard Chartered Breeze has indeed empowered and inspired everyone who have participated in any way. The bank hasn't only pioneered in an effective hiring campaign but has created such an opportunity and impact that would always be remembered. Just like what I've previously mentioned, life goes on with me. I would still be the Jonha that works in the same office, eats the same food but my network has got only gotten bigger. And oh, did I mention that I got invited to be one of the judges for the PEBA Awards Night on the 16th of December in Greenhills? I know, I couldn't have been noticed by the organizers hadn't I made it to the Top 10.
Standard Chartered Breeze, I may not have won the title "World's Coolest Intern" but I have already won thousands of hearts. What more could I ask for?
And that, is #My2010 story that I hope people would learn from.
In a competition, you can only expect two things: You either win, or you win big.
